Day 11: Last Day in Cambodia
To start our morning we went down to the hotel lobby for a delicious breakfast. We then rode in a small bus for about two hours to Kulen Mountain and arrived at a holy river which had a thouand shiva linga statues, Hindu phallic symbols, and a reclining Buddha carved on the bottom. The carvings were over 1200 years old!
Next, we hopped back into the bus, which brought us to a gigantic Buddha carved into an enormous boulder. We climbed up many stairs to reach it, but once at the top, we were amazed by the surrounding view.
Following that, the group trekked through a village to get to our lunch spot. Our lunch was inside of woven boxes and included sandwiches, an orange, taro chips, and cookies. After lunch, we walked down to a magnificent waterfall where some people opted to swim while others watched. The water was very refreshing on such a hot day.
After swimming, we all boarded the bus to go to the Cambodian Landmine Museum. We learned a lot about land mines: who placed them, how they were placed, and how they affect the people who live in Cambodia today. Our guide at the museum, Bill, also furthered our knowledge about the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. He explained more about the role that the US played in Cambodian history by dropping bombs around 1970.
After that informative lesson, we went to a temple called Banteay Srei, also known as “The Lady Temple.” We arrived in the late afternoon, and viewed many intricate bas reliefs.
After a day in the hot sun, we were able to take a break by relaxing on the bus ride back to the hotel. We then had some time to refresh ourselves and gather some energy before we went to enjoy our last dinner of the trip, authentic Cambodian food. After dinner, we walked to the Night Market where we did various activities. Some examples include eating rolled ice cream, having fish eat our feet, getting massages, and buying souvenirs.
